GN Commentary: January 28, 2010 - The iPad: Obsolete?

The iPad will make a nice toy, and it will undoubtedly be capable of some impressive tricks. But if you want something that's lasting, relevant and filled with timeless value, you won't find it in any cutting-edge technology. You'll find it in the pages of your Bible.

This just in! The iPad, Apple's newest technological innovation, is now obsolete!

Surprised? Well, you should be. The iPad was only unveiled Wednesday, and it won't even be available for purchase until late March. But one thing's for certain—this new iPad, for all its bells and whistles, will one day be obsolete.

Remember these guys? Yeah, they were cutting-edge once, too. Top-of-the-line stuff. So were Model Ts and turntables. But technology progresses; we invent faster, sleeker, more efficient. What was once new and vibrant becomes a useless relic. Don't believe me? Try watching this video on a 56k modem.

And one day, the iPad will take its place among the obsolete—among the typewriters and the washboards of ages past—and watch as the latest and greatest takes its place in the media's eye.

The constant stream of new technology and innovations is impressive, and the things it allows us to do are absolutely amazing. But wouldn't it be great if we had something that didn't need to be upgraded or thrown out every couple of years? Something we could depend on to stay relevant and up to date without having to sink wads of cash into it? Something that just...works?

The completed canon of the Bible has been around for almost two millennia. Two thousand years. How long did you have your last computer for? Half a decade? Maybe?

The Bible was a long time in the making. Parts of it are close to three and a half thousand years old. But the truly unique thing about it is that, despite the routine verbal assaults of naysayers, it still has relevance today. It has page after page, book after book of essential instruction on how to live this life to the fullest. And beyond that, you'll find a plan for mankind, 6,000 years in the making, alongside prophecies yet to be fulfilled.

Let me repeat that: this book tells the future. You won't find an app for that.

The iPad will make a nice toy, and it will undoubtedly be capable of some impressive tricks. But if you want something that's lasting, relevant and filled with timeless value, you won't find it in Apple's newest fad...or any other cutting-edge technology. You'll find it here—in the pages of your Bible.
